El título de este libro de Orwell, “Why I write” , me hizo pensar que encontraría en él un ensayo sobre la condición de los escritores y la literatura. Y aunque en cierto modo llega a abordar los motivos para escribir, este librito es básicamente un ensayo social y sobre la naturaleza humana.
Lo escribe en plena segunda guerra mundial y realiza un análisis muy personal de la sociedad inglesa y la Europa del momento.
“As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are only doing their duty, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life”.
Orwell muestra aquí también, al igual que en sus novelas, una extraordinaria sensibilidad frente a la desigualdad y la injusticia, las diferencias sociales y el abuso de poder. Refleja unos valores exquisitos y una necesidad de cambio y transformación: «desire to push the world in a certain direction».
Me pregunto por qué no hay más personas en el mundo semejantes a George Orwell. Además del talento para observar y analizar, y el saber ponerse en la piel de los demás, está la valentía para expresarlo, ya sea dándole la forma de una pieza artística o a viva voz.
“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. One cannot change this all in a moment, but one can at least change one’s own habits, and from time to time one can even, if one jeers loudly enough, send some worn-out and useless phrase –some jackboot, Achilles’heel, hotbed, melting pot, acid test, veritable inferno or other lump of verbal refuse-into the dustbin where it belongs”.
